The ex-HMAS Canberra, a former warship that served the Australian Navy between 1981 and 2005, is the first artificial reef in Victoria created specifically for diving. The vessel was scuttled off Barwon Heads in October 2009 and now lies in 30 metres of water.

Experience the thrill of diving in a shipwreck at the ex-HMAS Canberra. The dive site offers divers the opportunity to explore a large portion of the former Australian Navy ship. Swim over flight decks and through the bridge, engine rooms, galley and accommodation quarters.

The ex-HMAS Canberra was the second of four FFG-7 Class Guided Missile Frigates built for the Royal Australian Navy by Todd Pacific Shipyards Corporation Seattle, Washington, USA. The HMAS Canberra was commissioned on 21 March 1981 and de-commissioned on 12 November 2005.

The vessel hull is constructed of steel and the superstructure is aluminium alloy. It has an overall length of 138.1 metres and a beam of 13.7 metres. In service, the height from the keel to the top of the mast was approximately 39 metres. Parts of the ship, including the gas turbine engines, rudder, missile launcher, a section of the mast and propeller were removed by the Navy, prior to it being prepared for use as a dive site.

The J-Class submarines. J1, J2, J3, J4, J5, J7. Were built between 1915-1917. Overall Length was 274.7ft, beam 23ft and draught 14ft giving a displacement weight of 1210 tons surfaced. Their wartime complement was 5 officers and 40 men. The six British-built submarines were transferred to the Royal Australian Navy on 25 March 1919. They had served for a short time with the Royal Navy’s 11th Submarine Flotilla, and although they proved to be the fastest submarines of their time, they were unreliable. So they ended up in Australia! The six submarines departed Portsmouth on 9 April 1919, arriving in Sydney on 10 July where they underwent a very necessary refit. By May 1922 all six submarines had been decommissioned.

The J4 submarine was sold to the Melbourne Salvage Company on 26th February 1924 and she was scuttled off port Phillip Heads on the 4th June 1926.

Popularly known as the "26-meter sub" due to its current depth, she sits upright on a sandy bottom. Penetration is possible at several points, where, apparently, plates were removed prior to scuttling.

She lies facing north-south in 26 meters of water, her conning tower rising to 15 meters.
