Stories: Anise myrtle has been used for thousands of years by Indigenous Australians, particularly in the rainforests of northern New South Wales where the tree naturally grows. Traditionally, its leaves were valued for their calming aroma and brewed into soothing infusions - a kind of early herbal tea long before tea itself arrived in Australia.
What makes anise myrtle special is its naturally high anethole content (the same aromatic compound found in anise and fennel), which gives it that soft aniseed lift. Indigenous communities used it not only for its gentle flavour but also for its refreshing, uplifting scent. Today, it’s considered one of Australia’s finest native botanicals — bright, fragrant and beautifully versatile.
